Who’s ready to BEAT the summer slide?
What do I mean by Beat the Summer Slide? Just to explain in case you’ve never heard of the Summer Slide – this is referring to a decline in academic skills that CAN occur over the summer months when students aren’t using the skills they learned the previous year. This does NOT affect every student, but it is REAL… I’ve seen it time and time again. So… let’ do something about Beating the Summer Slide!
If you are wanting your students to continue learning throughout the summer, but you’re not sure what to give them to make that happen, I’ve got you covered!
Many moons ago, I would get a huge packet together for each of my students. I would load them up with pages and pages of “summer work”. Then I would encourage parents to let them play school. Believe it or not, I even went so far as to tell them if they brought it back to me the following school year (completed) I would give them a prize for a 2nd grader. I know… I was desperate to keep them learning. Now… I was at a VERY high-performing school, so I did get a lot of them bringing it back to me, but it still wasn’t 100%.
So… that got me thinking! Why not create something that the students could do digitally, and teachers didn’t have to prepare a THING! No work on your part. I will do it all for you! AND… IMMEDIATE FEEDBACK for the students!
