Crack the Code phonics task cards K-2 are a growing bundle of games from We Are Better Together. Kids use picture clues to spell out a hidden target word. The bundle currently includes nine skill sets covering short vowels, beginning blends, and digraphs. The blends and digraph sets comes with two card formats, answer boxes, and a letter mat.
What Is Crack the Code Phonics?

Crack the Code is a mystery-word phonics game. Students look at a row of pictures, sound out each one, and use those sounds to spell a secret target word. Because kids build or write the word themselves, this works best with a teacher nearby to confirm accuracy. That could mean a small group, an intervention setting, or a center where the answer sits on the back of the card so kids can check their own work.
Every round follows the same simple pattern. Students look at a set of pictures in sequence, sound out and blend them together, then build the word using the letter mat, magnetic letters, or an answer box, whichever fits your setup. Kids who learn the routine with short vowels can carry it straight into blends and digraphs. They never have to learn a new game for a new skill.
What Skills Are Currently Included
The bundle currently covers nine phonics skills: Short A, Short E, Short I, Short O, and Short U words, plus Beginning L-Blends, Beginning R-Blends, Beginning S-Blends, and Beginning Digraphs. Three more sets are on the way: Ending Digraphs, Ending N-Blends, and Ending S-Blends. That will bring the total to twelve sets as the bundle keeps growing.
The five short vowel sets build basic CVC decoding, the skill of blending a consonant, vowel, and consonant into one word. Bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, and sl make up the Beginning L-Blends set. Br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, and tr make up Beginning R-Blends, along with a teaching note on the tricky sound shift in dr and tr. Sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, and sw make up Beginning S-Blends, plus a note on the sc versus sk spelling rule. Sh, ch, wh, and th round out Beginning Digraphs, with notes on the wh and th patterns, since those two commonly trip kids up.
Two Card Formats in Every Set
Every blend and digraph set includes two complete card formats built around the same words. You’re never stuck picking one instructional approach over another. Blend Chunk Cards use three pictures and treat the blend as one combined sound. This fits a more traditional phonics approach, younger learners, or quick practice rounds. Phoneme Segmentation Cards use four pictures instead. Every individual sound gets its own picture. This matches true phoneme-level segmentation for classrooms following Science of Reading aligned, structured literacy instruction.
Building both formats into one resource covers two different instructional models without asking anyone to buy two separate products. A classroom doing quick blend-level practice can grab the three-picture chunk cards. A classroom that isolates every phoneme can use the four-picture segmentation cards for those same words. Most sets also include a Read This First guide. It walks through which format fits your classroom and flags any tricky sound patterns before you print.

What’s Included in Every Set
Each skill set includes both card formats, answer boxes, and a letter mat. Kids get a hands-on way to physically build and check each word instead of only writing it, and most sets also include a Read This First teaching guide. Every set follows this same structure, so once you’ve worked with one, you already know how to use the rest of the bundle.
Standards Alignment
The bundle aligns to Common Core reading foundations standards, including CCSS RF.K.2b, CCSS RF.K.2d, and CCSS RF.1.2b. RF.K.2b covers blending and segmenting syllables in spoken words. RF.K.2d covers isolating and pronouncing initial, medial vowel, and final phonemes in three-phoneme CVC words. RF.1.2b covers orally producing single-syllable words by blending phonemes, including consonant blends. Across the bundle, kids practice phoneme identification, blending, and spelling and encoding. That places the skill work in decoding and encoding rather than sight words or fluency.
Grade Level and Format
Crack the Code is built for kindergarten through 2nd grade. It comes as a digital PDF download. As a growing bundle, anyone who’s already purchased it gets the added sets for free.
Who This Is For
Crack the Code phonics task cards fit classrooms and interventionists who want a low-prep game. It covers a full progression from short vowels through beginning blends and digraphs in one place. The blend-chunk format and the phoneme-segmentation format both live in the same resource. That makes it work equally well for a traditional phonics classroom and a Science of Reading aligned, structured literacy classroom, without needing two separate purchases to support either approach.
