Short Story Writing Prompts

These short story writing prompts are such a fun way to get your students writing!  The prompts are relatable for your students, and every booklet turns out different depending on the pages they use.  Here’s how it works:

SET UP

To set up this writing center, here’s how we do it:

  1. Print about 15 pages of each sheet
  2. Cut the sheets in half and place in sheet protectors
  3. Put the binder in your writing center
  4. Students grab the binder and take out 4 or 5 sheets that they want to use for their story
  5. Then they begin the writing process (focusing on the images to help them)
  6. They staple their booklet together
  7. Once the writing is done, they color the images

Publish our stories

As the year progresses, our students can actually “publish their stories”.  We go over their booklet together, then usually the last 5 to 7 minutes of class (after everyone is packed up) they can sit in our leader chair and share their book with the class.

They absolutely love this part of the process, and it truly helps other struggling writers get a sense of what writers do.  I’ve found this to be a huge motivator of students wanting to write in our centers.

8 Short Story Writing Prompts

Students can make their own titles, but here’s what these 8 cover:

  • Late for school (or an event)
  • Learning to dance
  • Lost dog
  • New puppy
  • Planting a seed
  • Skateboard Accident
  • Stage Fright
  • Trip to the dentist

Christmas Writing Prompts

These turned out so cute for the month of December!

  • Christmas Dinner Disaster
  • Christmas Eve Detective
  • Christmas Problems
  • Christmas Tree Decorating
  • Grumpy Christmas Bear
  • Making a Gingerbread House
  • Ready for Christmas Eve

WINTER SHORT STORY WRITING PROMPTS

These are perfect to add to your centers during the winter months.

  • A sleepy winter (animals sleeping images)
  • Building a snowman
  • Fun in the snow
  • Learning to ski
  • Penguin goes fishing
  • Snow problems
  • Snow sports

And again – students can create their own stories and titles – depending on the images/pages that they pick to make their booklet.

SPARK THE WRITING CREATIVITY

I hope these help you as much as our writing prompts and 5-page booklets have helped us!  I always started out the year with reluctant writers, but by the end… we created an atmosphere where students felt like accomplished writers and loved sharing their ideas.

I’d love to hear how it goes for you!

Until next time!
