Place Value to 100 Coding Robot Activity for 1st Grade
Make place value practice more hands-on with this place value to 100 coding robot activity for 1st grade. Students read a task card about the digits in the tens place and ones place, solve it, and then program their coding robot to travel to the picture that matches the answer.
It is a simple way to bring coding into your math block while students build number sense, practice sequencing, and get the instant feedback of seeing whether the robot landed in the right spot. Perfect for math centers, early finishers, and small groups.
WHAT'S INCLUDED:
- Task cards that students read and answer, with each answer matching a picture on the mat
- Enough picture cards to build a 6x6 grid
- Answer document so students can check their work after the coding robot reaches its spot
- Coding sheet for students to record the movements they programmed
IMPORTANT NOTE:
- The coding robot is not included. Use the programmable coding robot you already have.
- The plastic mat is not included. You print and arrange the picture cards to make your grid.
HOW THIS WORKS:
- Print the picture cards and lay them out in a 6x6 grid under or on your mat.
- Students choose a task card and figure out the answer using tens and ones.
- They find the matching picture on the grid and plan the path for the coding robot.
- They record each move on the coding sheet, then program the robot.
- Students use the answer document to check whether the robot reached the correct card.
BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS:
- Strengthens understanding of tens and ones within 100
- Builds early coding and problem-solving skills
- Encourages planning, directionality, and sequencing
- Supports independent practice with built-in self-checking
- Keeps learners engaged through movement and play

The Bee-Bot game engages students by introducing coding through interactive play. Students program the Bee-Bot to navigate a themed grid, such as a map or story path, to reach specific destinations. This hands-on activity teaches sequencing, problem-solving, and directional skills in an exciting way. Each challenge encourages teamwork and critical thinking, as students work together to plan moves and troubleshoot, making learning about coding both accessible and enjoyable.

I have a couple of struggling students that have great difficulty with the math that we are completing. I have shown them how to use the robots and complete some of your resources. They love to work on these skills and they feel as if they are playing games! I love these for those students.
