Resource Type:

Counting coins coding robot practice gives first and second grade students a hands-on way to build money skills. Students read a task card, count a set of coins up to 40 cents, and then program their coding robot to travel to the picture card that matches the answer.

Made for use with a programmable coding robot you already have in your classroom, this activity turns coin counting into a movement and problem-solving challenge. Please note that the coding robot and the plastic mat are not included.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

  • Task cards for students to read and answer, with each answer matching a card on the mat
  • Enough picture cards to build a 6x6 grid
  • Answer document so students can check their work once the coding robot reaches its location
  • Coding sheet for students to record each movement they program

HOW THIS WORKS:

  • Lay out the picture cards in a 6x6 grid on your plastic mat
  • Students choose a task card and count the coins up to 40 cents
  • They find the answer on the grid and plan the path for their coding robot
  • They record the steps on the coding sheet, then program and run the robot
  • Students use the answer document to check whether the robot landed on the correct card

BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS:

  • Builds confidence identifying and counting pennies, nickels, and dimes
  • Introduces early coding through sequencing and direction
  • Encourages planning, predicting, and checking work
  • Supports independent practice at math centers or STEM centers
  • Keeps students engaged with a hands-on, self-checking format

WHY TEACHERS LOVE IT:

  • Simple printable setup with no extra prep beyond cutting the cards
  • Works with the coding robot you already own
  • Easy way to add technology to your money unit

The Bee-Bot game engages students by introducing coding through interactive play. Students program the Bee-Bot to navigate a themed grid, such as a map or story path, to reach specific destinations. This hands-on activity teaches sequencing, problem-solving, and directional skills in an exciting way. Each challenge encourages teamwork and critical thinking, as students work together to plan moves and troubleshoot, making learning about coding both accessible and enjoyable.

I was able to use this resource in an independent practice of skills. Not only did it help practice the math skills it kept them engaged by applying their knowledge of coding. It was an easy check for understanding as I walked through each small group. Exactly what I was needing. I created my own mat with the cards by taping them together, then laminated. Just roll up to store and lay out when needed.
