Compound Words Coding Robot Mat Activity with Pictures

Introduce coding with a compound words coding robot activity that gets students thinking, problem solving, and programming. Students look at two pictures, figure out the compound word they make, and then program their coding robot to travel to the matching picture on the mat.

It is a hands-on way to build vocabulary and early coding skills in one literacy center. Teachers use the coding robot they already have in the classroom. The coding robot and the plastic mat are not included.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

• Task cards that students read and answer, where each answer matches a card on the mat
• Two types of task cards: one set shows the words with the pictures (such as back and pack) and one set shows pictures only
• Enough picture cards to build a 6x6 grid
• Answer document so students can check their answer once the coding robot reaches its spot
• Coding sheet for students to record each movement

HOW THIS WORKS:

• Lay the picture cards in a 6x6 grid on your plastic mat
• Students choose a task card and identify the two pictures
• They put the two words together to find the compound word
• Students plan the path and record the moves on the coding sheet
• They program the coding robot, then check the answer document
